Created and curated by the Jordan Lake Trail Conservation Association, Mason Point Horse Trail is an 8.8 mile (14.2 km) intermediate riding trail located near Jordan Lake State Recreational Area. Comprising of two loops, Loop A is 5.3 miles where as Loop B is 3.5 miles, The Mason Point Horse Trail welcomes hikers, riders and hunters to its wooded terrain and vast nature preserve.

Part of Jordan Lake Gameland, the trail is open to hikers and equestrians year round. The trail closes when the water level in Jordan Lake reaches 217 feet due to part of the trail flooding. At 53 m elevation and moderately difficult, riders will need to meet a variety of conditions before accessing the trail. Hikers do not need to meet any requirements other than admission to the trail.

 

Intermediate hikers will find the wood terrain a nice change of pace from regular flat hikes. The horse trail is maked w ith orange arrows or orange diamond paint blazes. For safety reasons, it is important to tell somoeone where you are going and when you plan to return, bring emergency contact inforamation along, wear bright colors for visibility in case of emergency and carry a GPS enabled fully charged cell phone, a paper map, a whistle and plenty of drinking water.

 

Requirements:

  • You must have a valid Game Land License if you are 16 or older in order to ride. Please go to www.ncwildlife.org to purchase using MasterCard  or Visa.
  • Riders must be able to present a current negative Coggins Test report for each horse.
  • Please ride only when the trail is posted as open, and only during the daylight hours.
  • Stay on the trail.  Riding off the marked trail is prohibited and could be dangerous.  Horseback riding on or in firelines, fields, seeded roads, wildlife openings, or gravel roads that are not included in the designated trail system is prohibited.
  • Camping is prohibited.
  • Mountain bike riding is prohibited, on or off the trail, except for hunters in the act of hunting
  • Alcoholic beverages are prohibited. 
  • Leave no trace or trash… pack it out!
  • Riders are responsible for removing any hay or manure from the parking lot by scattering it in the surrounding woods.
